Antonio Banderas

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas first came to the United States in 1991, starring as a Cuban trumpeter in The Mambo Kings. Banderas already had several Spanish feature films and awards by the time he came to the United States. Born in Málaga, Spain, his early ambition was to become a professional soccer player; however, due to an injury, that did not seem feasible. Banderas discovered his true calling when he saw Milos Forman's hit 1979 cult movie Hair- he knew he wanted to be an actor. In 1981, Banderas moved to Madrid, auditioning for and earning a place as an ensemble member of the National Theater of Spain. In his spare time from acting, he waited on tables to make a living. The 1988 hit Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was a film that first brought Banderas to the attention of an international audience. Films with controversial themes didn't intimidate Banderas in the slightest; after all, he was an actor who had portray gay characters several times in films and then breezily shrugged off any resultant rumors that he was himself gay. Such characterizations represented gutsy career moves. Banderas didn't speak any English when he arrived states-side, yet he was cast in The Mambo Kings without hesitation.
